For those of you preparing for your first MUN, I have some useful and definitely helpful tips at hand!
1. Know your agenda!
Knowing your agenda is the most important step in preparing for a conference. Usually agendas are very sophisticated issues in the ongoing international society, and much research is needed. Make sure you are fully aware of what countries are actively involved with the agenda, what countries are neutral and what the main focus of the agenda is.
2. Pick your delegation!
Once you are well acquainted with the agenda, you have the knowledge to choose a delegation which has a strong argument. Your job is to choose a delegation which is not neutral but rather has a firm stance on the issue that your agenda presents. This way, you will have much to say, and be able to influence others' stances. If you are successful at passing/failing (whichever according to your country's stance) your agenda, it'll bring you closer to receiving the best delegate award ; ) !
3. Research research research !
Now you have picked the delegation which you are to represent, therefore your next step is to deeply research about the country's stance in the agenda. Keep in mind which countries are for or against. Later, it'll be helpful for you to team up with those that pose the same stance as you. For countries that are against your delegation, think up of ways to defend yourself from them. The more information you have, it’ll be easier to be influential.
4. At the conference
Be confident, and be active! Don’t hesitate to show off all you’ve prepared. Raise your placards high and speak for your country’s benefit! Lastly, the special key to having a successful Model United Nations conference is simply enjoying yourself!
